The title of this piece was inspired by the old saying, “ you are skating on thin ice “, the meaning of this being that we are about to get into some very serious trouble. The sculpture was inspired by quite literally skating on thin ice. I was in my very early teens when a friend and I went skating on a local lake at a county park. Ignoring the caution barrels, (I didn’t even recall seeing them until later), we skated away from the crowds out onto some really smooth lightly trafficked ice in the middle of the lake. About this time the voice of a park ranger on a bullhorn registered as well as the fact that he was directing someone to get off of the unsafe ice. That someone was us. As we stopped to listen the ice began to pop and crack. This rather sickening sound was originating directly under our feet. Adrenalin must have lent us wings as we skated off the ice. That and the fact that we were probably both less that 90 lbs saved us from a cold swim or worse.
Here the drama ends and the reality of the moment and the sculpture diverge.  My skater has, unfortunately broken through and is struggling to reach safety.
