I grew up on a small family farm. For the last forty years my dad has kept a small herd of beef cattle on this farm. In the winter he carries hay down to a windswept pasture or breaks ice in the watering trough. In the summer we swelter and itch while we bale hay. In the spring after every storm, we would check and fix fence. In spite of all the work he loves his cows. So do I. I have often watched Dad, leaning on a gate or fence watching his small herd of cattle. Most people would readily accept the description of cows as placid, slow or peaceful. They are all of these things but they are also more. It may come as a bit of a revelation to those with little experience with cattle but they can also be playful, aggressive, protective, curious, stoic and surprisingly smart. The cow and bull are monuments to this. The two sculptures are like pieces of a puzzle. They fit together in at least three different combinations. Depending on how the pieces are arranged they relate with each other and with their surroundings in a completely different way. These two sculptures work well individually or as a set.
They may be purchased separately.
