Like the Pegasus, I first came in contact with the centaur while reading Greek mythology. The myth of the centaur may have arisen by someone in the dawn of history witnessing, for the first time, man on horseback and seeing not a horse and rider but rather one being. The idea of a creature, human from the waist up and horse from the waist down is fun subject material for sculpture.
I had some experience with horses as I grew up on a farm. I also ride, albeit not very well. In preparation for this sculpture I added to my knowledge of the horse by visiting fairs and horse barns where I photographed and video taped various horse breeds. I studied their anatomy and the grace of their movement.
The horse half of my centaur is somewhat of a mixture of Quarter horse, a bit of thoroughbred and a substantial part Percheron. From the quarter horse it gets its powerful hindquarters. From the thoroughbred it gets its athleticism and from the Percheron it derives its massive frame. I tried to provide a believable transition from the muscles and frame of the horse with those in the man. I found this joining of man with horse to be an enjoyable challenge.
In my sculpture the Centaur Warrior canters downhill then abruptly changes his direction. This rapid stop and turn lifts his hindquarters as he simultaneously twists to hurl his spear.
